In a rapidly evolving work environment, effective leadership of remote teams has become an essential skill for business leaders.

Speaking at IMEX Frankfurt on The Meeting Room: Out of Office podcast, Chloe Richardson, head of content at the Event Leaders Exchange (ELX), shared her strategies for building intentional team culture and leading with purpose in a remote work setting.

Richardson highlighted the importance of fostering deliberate team connections, noting that culture exists regardless of intent. “Culture will happen whether you design it or not,” she explained, emphasising the value of creating a workplace culture by design rather than leaving it to chance.

A key element of Richardson’s approach is the need for purposeful meetings. She warned against the trap of holding meetings for the sake of it, advocating instead for clear objectives and meaningful engagement. “Virtual meetings shouldn’t be a tick-box exercise—they should drive impact and create alignment within teams,” she said.

Another focus of the discussion was building trust and collaboration in remote settings. Richardson stressed the importance of creating spaces where team members feel supported and empowered to contribute, even when they are geographically dispersed.

The conversation also touched on the evolving expectations of remote and hybrid workforces. Richardson noted that flexibility and adaptability remain crucial, with leaders needing to balance team productivity with individual well-being.

As the business events industry continues to adapt to new ways of working, Richardson’s insights offer valuable guidance for organisations striving to lead effectively in a remote-first world.
