For the first time in its 16-year history, a major geographic congress has chosen Italy to host its annual conference.
A combined effort between the local Geospatial community, local universities and the Firenze Convention Bureau saw Florence win the bid to host the annual congress of the Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo).
The 16th edition of OSGeo will take place across multiple venues including Florence at the Palazzo dei Congressi, Palazzo degli Affari and the University of Florence from 22 to 27 August 2022.
The non-profit organisation supports and promotes the collaborative development of free and open-source geographic technologies and open geospatial data. It is an international congress attended by around 1,000 delegates every year.
“The organising committee, which I represent, is very happy with the result obtained which repays us for the efforts made in recent years” FOSS4G 2022 chair Luca Delucchi said.
The format of the congress, whether entirely in-person, hybrid or online, will be decided on the basis of the evolution of the global pandemic and any restrictive measures that will gradually be prescribed by the authorities.
“This is a gift we want to give to the whole Italian community which has always been very active in helping to spread geographic free software. We are happy that the candidacy of Florence and the collaboration with the other actors of the city such as Firenze Convention Bureau, Firenze Fiera, AIM Group International and the University of Florence, has allowed us to prepare a winning proposal and finally be able to bring this to Italy," Delucchi added.
“Now we have to roll up our sleeves and work hard to better organize the conference and all related activities: we are confident of making the 2022 congress experience memorable.”
