Explore Glasgow...without actually visiting

In a bid to encourage delegates to step away from their computers, Glasgow Convention Bureau has launched a virtual walking route around the city.

As part of the #VirtualGlasgow Toolkit, the Glasgow Convention Bureau has laid out a route around the city that will take 'walkers' past some of the city’s ‘sustainable superstars’.

However, participants don't have to be in Glasgow to enjoy the route and views.

Walkers can calculate the steps from any walk they go on, anywhere in the world, and then input those steps into the Walking World website where the ‘Dear Green Place’ route is hosted. The platform will then subtract your steps from the 117,502 steps it takes to complete the Dear Green Place walk and unlock the sites you would see if you were actually walking the route.

The sites are labelled as milestones on the website and are related to sustainable sites and initiatives in Glasgow, including the Zero Waste Market, Scottish Event Campus and Whitelee Windfarm.

Every milestone offers beautiful imagery and a description of the site. For example, milestone one is the City Chambers: “The City Chambers in Glasgow has functioned as the headquarters of Glasgow City Council since 1996…”

The walking tour aligns with goal three of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Good Health & Wellbeing, helping encourage delegates joining a conference online to use their non-conference time to step away from their computers.

Glasgow Convention Bureau international manager, Wendy Russell, who led the initiative said: “To welcome delegates logging in from home, the virtual walks are an ideal addition to our #VirtualGlasgow toolkit to help online delegates feel part of the live conference experience by enjoying and learning about their virtual host city.”

Glasgow Convention Bureau, head of tourism and conventions, Aileen Crawford added: “Although we are all delighted to be welcoming back in-person conferences to our city, we appreciate that hybrid meetings have offered our clients a new way of connecting with their members and communities and expanding knowledge to a wider audience.

“To support those delegates who are unable to join us in person, these virtual walks help our online delegates experience Glasgow by walking around our sustainable city virtually!”
