Queensland’s Cairns Convention Centre flaunted its sustainability credentials
to help win the bid to host the eco-conscious Australian and New Zealand
College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) Annual Scientific Meeting.
Due to take place in May 2025, the meetings will bring together
more than 1,600 experts in anaesthesia, perioperative medicine, and pain
medicine from around the world.
Sustainability will be one of the key themes for the Conference
and is inherently at the forefront of ANZCA’s initiatives, with anaesthetists continuing
to adopt sustainable practices by minimising gas wastage, using less harmful
gases, and promoting the recycling and reuse of equipment.
Janet Hamilton, general manager of Cairns Convention Centre,
emphasised the importance of sustainability in event planning: “It is
important as an industry that both clients and venues look for ways to be
leaders in delivering sustainable events. We aim for energy efficiency, reduced
food waste, recycling opportunities, and the use of sustainable products and
suppliers. Our Centre focuses on sustainability, featuring a sunscreen façade,
rainwater storage, EV charging stations, and energy-efficient lights and fans.”
Delegates will engage in a programme featuring local, national, and international speakers, along with workshops to
support members skills and Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
requirements.
The Conference will also highlight the work of
regional fellows operating in remote areas. By showcasing their experiences and
solutions, the Conference aims to shed light on their critical role in
delivering high-quality healthcare in under-resourced regions and promote
discussions on improving support for medical practitioners in these locations.
Dr. Andrew Potter, the 2025 ANZCA ASM Convenor, expressed
his enthusiasm: “We are thrilled to welcome our colleagues to Cairns for this
significant scientific meeting. Our program is designed to provide
evidence-based insights that will shape the future of our profession, while
also addressing sustainability and personal wellbeing. We look forward to
showcasing the incredible work being done in our field against the beautiful
backdrop of our hometown.”
Hamilton added, “We look forward to hosting the 2025 Australian
and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) Annual Scientific Meeting
(ASM). The college’s focus on sustainability and supporting regional fellows is
destined to leave a positive impact on the local community.”
