A new research initiative will explore how subventions—financial incentives offered by destinations to attract conferences and events—can be used to drive sustainability and societal impact.

The study, led by Conferli in collaboration with #Meet4Impact and the GDS-Movement, aims to analyse current subvention strategies and their effectiveness.

Why is this research needed?

A 2021 study by Conferli found that subventions played a key role in bringing conferences back to destinations after the pandemic. Now, as sustainability and impact become priorities, this research will examine how subventions can support these goals. The study will identify trends, challenges, and best practices to help destinations and associations refine their strategies.

"Subventions have long been a tool for attracting conferences, but their potential to drive sustainability and impact remains underexplored," said Conferli co-founder, Bregje Frens. "This research will provide destinations and associations with data-driven insights to refine their strategies, ensuring subventions align with broader environmental and societal goals. Industry input is vital—join the conversation by completing the survey."

Industry input

Until 15 April, the research is seeking industry input from two survey. One for destinations to complete and the other for associations to complete. The surveys cover subvention practices, sustainability efforts, and impact-driven initiatives across different destinations. Participants will contribute to findings that will inform recommendations for convention bureaus, policymakers, and other stakeholders.
