Malaysia’s largest state, Sarawak, has published the first volume of its academic journal designed to help the international market ‘reset and recover’ while identifying event legacy impact opportunities.

Business Event Sarawak (BESarawak), Sarawak’s official convention bureau, partnered with several institutions, including the International Congress & Convention Association (ICCA) and Curtin University Malaysia to produce the International Journal of Business Events and Legacies (IJBEL).

The 115-page journal uses practical industry case studies and academic analysis to address a host of topics including the effectiveness of hybrid events; managing sustainable events in an urban destination; hosting business events in times of crisis; optimising e-tourism and e-marketplaces for business events, and legacy approaches.

The opening chapter of the journal addresses the legacy impact of business events using a case study of the International Conference on Education in the Digital Ecosystem (ICEdDE) 2019. Using a legacy mapping system, BESLegacy Initiative Guideline, BESarawak was able to map and demonstrate the short, medium, and long-term legacy impacts of the conference.

Among the downloadable papers in the journal are ‘Managing Minor Events for a Sustainable Tourism Development of an Urban Destination’ which reflects on the potential role of minor events in supporting a sustainable tourism development of an urban destination.

The journal also examines ‘The Perspectives of Event Experience Post Covid-19’ which looks at why stakeholders in event education and event design need to rethink the delivery of event experiences – prioritising creating memorable experiences.

“Sarawak’s business events industry is proactive in searching for new ways to deliver business events successfully and lead the way in terms of industry development,” said Amelia Roziman, BESarawak’s CEO. “We are looking outwards to help the global industry reset and recover through empirical research and real industry experiences. This involves forging collaborations at micro and macro levels with local, national and international players.”

BESarawak also worked with the Universiti Teknologi MARA and Sarawak Research Society to develop the journal and sought support from international destinations including Singapore, the UK, Italy, France, Spain, Australia, China, USA, Oman, Libya, Serbia, Iran, Greece, Switzerland in order to collate data, research and case studies.
