Malaysia passed another major milestone in the reopening of business events with a large-scale gathering of officials.
The Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) hosted the country’s first major business event during the COVID-19 Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO) with stringent safety and security protocols in place.
The one-day event convened more than 4,500 people, including the Malaysian Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, senior ministers, dignitaries and participants from a non-governmental organisation.

Mask wearing was mandatory in public areas and social distancing measures were enforced throughout the venue.
“We have rigorous health and safety measures, delegate management system, as well as on-site communication including ‘mobile human safety reminders’ encouraging strict adherence and the provision of guidance and compliance,” said Gunther Beissel, Chief Executive Officer, Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre.
Ready-to-eat packed meals were served to each attendee at their respective seats during lunch coffee breaks with pre-wrapped cutlery set to provide a safe and controlled catering system for the wellbeing of attendees and our team members.
“Successful hosting of such mass gathering signals a start to rebuilding public confidence in the meetings and events industry and we are proud to have delivered the event seamlessly within a safe, and structured manner.
We are excited to see Business Events rebound and thrilled to be hosting more major events and exhibitions in a safe, organised, and secure environment in accordance with the SOPs that have been endorsed by the Malaysian Government,” said Beissel.
Mark Cochrane, Regional Manager Asia-Pacific of UFI, the global association for the exhibition industry, said: “We are pleased to see another Asian exhibition market begin to reopen and play a vital role in the economic recovery of the region. MITEC is one of UFI’s 350+ members in Asia who will each assist local economies to return to growth.”
