For international associations today, choosing a meeting destination is no longer simply about comparing venues, hotels, flight access and city infrastructure. What increasingly drives decision-making is whether a destination can help deliver clear outcomes: will members gain new knowledge and connections? Will sponsors engage with the right communities? Will the board see a meaningful return on investment (ROI)? And will the meeting continue to generate knowledge or social impact after it ends?

This is where Taiwan brings distinctive value as a meetings destination. Through its industry clusters, academic and research networks, local support systems, sustainability tools and delegate experiences, Taiwan can help international associations transform a single event into outcomes that are visible, measurable and lasting.

From destination selection to outcome design

International association meetings are under growing pressure to demonstrate results. Members expect professional development. Sponsors look for targeted engagement. Host cities seek industry connections and knowledge exchange. Associations must show their boards that the investment is worthwhile.

As a result, destination selection has moved beyond logistics and has become part of meeting strategy.

According to MEET TAIWAN, Taiwan’s business events industry generated NT$51.7 billion in output value in 2025. The destination hosted 460 international conferences and 242 exhibitions, while 268,593 overseas participants travelled to Taiwan for business events activities. These figures show not only market scale, but also the maturity of Taiwan’s meetings ecosystem.

Across sectors and various different meeting themes, the destination can connect organisers with relevant professional communities, industry resources and local sites of expertise, allowing the destination itself to become part of the meeting outcome.

Content-driven ROI: bringing the destination into the programme

For international associations, ROI is not limited to registration income, exhibition sales or sponsorship revenue. Longer-term value comes from programme quality, member learning, professional exchange, industry connections and future collaboration opportunities.

COMPUTEX 2026 offers a clear example. Taiwan’s industry strength was not just a backdrop to the event but became part of the content and professional exchange. Under the theme ‘AI Together’, COMPUTEX 2026 focused on AI computing, robotics and smart mobility, and next-generation technologies. The show attracted 111,312 buyers and visitors from 152 countries and regions, highlighting the links between technology development, manufacturing supply chains and real-world applications.

This strength is also apparent in its smart cities and public service innovation. The 2029 ITS World Congress, to be held in Taipei, is expected to feature 200 forums, more than 1,000 exhibitors, 500 exhibitions and technical visits, and over 20,000 participants from around the world. For delegates, Taiwan’s smart transportation systems, urban governance, AI applications and real-world urban testbeds can be translated into case studies, technology showcases, site visits and public-private sector dialogues.

Segmented ROX: designing experiences around delegate motivation

Return on Experience, or ROX, is about creating lasting memories, meaningful connections and a stronger affinity with the meeting, the association and the host city. Delegate experiences are an effective tool to strengthen member engagement, post-event advocacy and organisational identity.

Taiwan’s ROX advantage lies in its compact urban scale, layered local culture and mature yet warm hospitality. In Taipei, conference venues, hotels, business spaces, restaurants, cultural sites and public transport are closely connected. Delegates can move efficiently between formal sessions, business meetings, social events and city experiences within a limited stay. This combination of convenience and human connection makes it easy to integrate destination experiences into the overall meeting design, rather than treating them as optional post-meeting activities.

The 2026 Rotary International Convention illustrates this well. Rotary International has long emphasised service, fellowship and cross-border exchange. The 2026 convention was held in Taipei and welcomed more than 38,000 people from 140 countries and regions, making it one of Rotary’s largest conventions in recent years.

For an international association built around membership, shared values and community service, the destination experience is shaped by local hosting, cultural exchange, volunteer engagement and interaction with the city. Taiwan’s 12 host districts and local Rotary volunteers played a visible role in welcoming international delegates, ensuring enriching encounters.

Risk reduction

When international associations hold meetings in an unfamiliar destination, they face more than venue selection. They must also manage administrative procedures, site inspections, supplier communication, government liaison, language support, cross-cultural co-ordination and delegate services. If any of these elements lack local support, both time costs and execution risks can increase.

A destination that can reduce information gaps, shorten the learning curve and improve execution certainty creates ROI in its own right.

Taiwan has developed a comprehensive meetings support system across venues, hotels, professional conference organisers, transportation, language services, technical support and related suppliers. MEET TAIWAN also assists non-governmental organisations in bidding for and hosting international conferences, while providing information on online meetings, visas and expedited immigration services.

For international associations hosting in Taiwan for the first time, this support helps reduce uncertainty in an unfamiliar market. It allows organisers to focus more resources on programme design, member services and sponsor relationships.

Sustainability has become an essential issue for international association meetings. Members, boards, sponsors and stakeholders increasingly expect meetings to deliver professional value while also demonstrating environmental and social responsibility.

And it must be planned, implemented, documented and communicated.

Taiwan has been actively advancing sustainable MICE practices. With support from the International Trade Administration, Ministry of Economic Affairs, MEET TAIWAN has, over the past three years, guided 85 business events in energy-saving and carbon-reduction initiatives. These efforts have resulted in a cumulative carbon reduction of 296 tonnes, achieved a reduction rate of 78 per cent and supported the acquisition of 18 ISO international certifications.

MEET TAIWAN’s Carbon Footprint Calculator helps MICE organisers estimate event-related emissions and develop more data-informed carbon-reduction plans.

These tools and practices help organisers integrate sustainability into the meeting process, from reducing single-use materials and planning transportation and catering, to encouraging exhibitors and suppliers to participate.

For international associations, choosing Taiwan is not simply choosing a meeting destination. It is choosing a partner that can help co-design outcomes, create value and extend impact beyond the event itself.
