Africa’s Travel and Tourism Summit – a turning point for the continent

The first pan-African conference to be held on South African soil since February 2020 takes place this weekend. Africa’s Travel and Tourism Summit (ATTS) is set to represent a turning point for the continent’s tourism sector

Promising to be the continent’s most exciting gathering of tourism stakeholders yet, the hybrid event will take place simultaneously in three major cites – Johannesburg, Durban and Lagos – between 19-21 September.

Africa’s Travel and Tourism Summit will bring together community delegates, tourism ministers, industry associations, tourism boards, destination marketing organisations and various others across the tourism value chain for the first time since the Covid-19 outbreak.

Exciting topics will be on the Summit’s agenda, including how travel tech start-ups can prosper following the chaos of the pandemic, how airlines can recover and grow, and the advent of a regional uni-Visa for Africa to ease travel across borders.

Over the course of three days, the Summit will showcase Africa as a destination and allow stakeholders to come together to reflect on the journey ahead. It is hoped the Summit will lead to ideas and trends culminating in recovery initiatives and solutions.

To kick-start the event, there will be a day designed to empower Future Pioneers and Game Changers in the tourism sector. Another day has been designed to assist small to medium tourism enterprises, the backbone of the sector. While the event will comply with current Covid-19 protocols, it will also help to focus on safe practices and procedures for the tourism industry as a whole.

The Tourism Sector Recovery Plan, released in March this year, forms part of the South African government’s Economic Reconstruction and Recovery Plan, aimed at helping to reboot the country’s economy.
