Almost 30,000 cancer specialists will meet in Paris.
The city, which recently topped the ICCA City Rankings for international association meetings, will host the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) annual congress.
It is the first time ESMO has chosen the French capital for its flagship meeting, which is being held at Paris Convention Centre and Paris Expo Porte de Versailles, in September 2021.
The ESMO 2021 programme will cover new research in immunotherapy, nursing and palliative care, rare cancers and medicines. Specialists from Gustave Roussy Cancer Campus Paris, Europe's leading cancer care centre, will help create the programme along with some 300 international experts working in the field.
With more than 20,000 members representing oncology professionals from more than 150 countries, ESMO is the society of reference for oncology education and information.
CEO Keith McGregor said: "ESMO is delighted to hold its congress in Paris in 2021. The society was founded in 1975 and the first congress was held in Nice the same year, with pioneers in oncology gathering to exchange knowledge. The goal was, and remains, after more than 40 years, to provide a platform to bring the oncology community together to improve patient care.
“The ESMO congress has grown dramatically and is now the leading oncology event in Europe attracting nearly 30,000 clinicians, researchers, oncology nurses, patient advocates, journalists and representatives from the pharmaceutical industry from all over the world."
Pablo Nakhlé Cerruti, CEO of Viparis, said: "We are proud to welcome the European Society for Medical Oncology Congress. This is a real vote of confidence for Paris Convention Centre as the home of world leading events. Since its opening a year and half ago, it has already hosted thirteen world conferences, and 30 more are already in the planning stages. With Paris Convention Bureau, we will continue to make Paris one of the greatest destinations for the very largest gatherings."
