Association meetings drove an 80 per cent increase in ‘economic impact’ delivered by the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (the Centre) as Malaysia benefited to the tune of RM888m (£164m).
More than 2.18 million delegates took part in 1,485 events
at the venue, an increase of 49 per cent, or 700,000, on 2017, swelling the
country’s coffers by RM395m (£73m).
The Centre saw record growth across the majority of its
business segments, with the association meetings segment registering the
largest increase of 22 per cent compared to the corresponding period in 2017.
This was followed by corporate meetings and banqueting events (corporate sales
segment) with a 20 per cent increase and exhibitions segment with 12 per cent
growth.
General manager, Alan Pryor, said: “We are delighted with
our performance last year and I am happy to witness the hard work of our
dedicated and highly experienced team is bearing fruit. It is especially
pleasing to see an increase across most of our business segments.
He added: “2018 was also a busy year for us on the industry
engagement front. We delivered our first major North American client
educational programme with Maritz Global Events, hosted by the Kuala Lumpur
Convention Centre Business Events Alliance (KLCCBEA).”
An expansion of the Centre, opening later this year, will
add an additional 11,000sqm to the venue.
