HP What has been the most important lesson you’ve learnt about leadership?

LZ 360-degree communication. It is important to lead by also receiving feedback and input from those who are being led. Be ready for the answers you are given and have the courage to make needed improvements.

HP When were you at your lowest ebb during the pandemic?

LZ When people I know died from the virus both before, and after, the availability of the vaccines. It is hard to understand the political controversy surrounding the life-saving options available.

HP What were your daily coping mechanisms?

LZ Just taking time to walk, relax and play with my dogs instead of sitting at the computer 24/7. I hope I can continue and encourage that when we all start back to the office full time!

HP During the pandemic it has been difficult not to point the finger when things go wrong, what’s your accountability strategy as a leader?

LZ It is important to own up to mistakes and missteps when they happen and to focus on how to move forward and ensure those issues never happen again. No single person is usually responsible. It is a team effort and the whole team can learn from mistakes.

HP When you look back on the last 20 months what makes you most proud?

LZ I am proud that I learned so much about virtual meetings and health policy in such a short time!

HP What did you learn about your own leadership style?

LZ I learned to step back and allow others who are more experienced in digital content to take the reins.

HP Did you make any changes to how you manage your team and if so, what were they?

LZ I allowed my team to be flexible and more relaxed and was less stressed out than usual.

HP What would you say to other leaders who are struggling in their role?

LZ Ask questions of the team. Don’t just dictate projects and timelines. Ask them what they are struggling with or what they need. And learn about their families and friends who may have been impacted by this deadly pandemic. We all need to be more sympathetic and empathetic during this time.
