Business Events Wellington has launched the International Conference Leaders Fund to enable researchers and academics based in Wellington, New Zealand, to attend more international conferences and events and enhance their standing in the international research community.

The fund, launched in partnership with Tourism New Zealand, is designed to raise the international profiles and strengthen the networks of university researchers and academics based in the city.

It will also be used to attract international conferences that align with Wellington’s key strategic sectors: Science, climate action, environment, technology and screen.

“The strength of Wellington’s conference offering lies in its world-class research community,” said Irette Ferreira, manager of Business Events Wellington.

“This fund supports our local experts to lead on the world stage, bringing more international events – and the knowledge, innovation, and economic benefits they deliver – home to Wellington.”

Penelope Ryan, global manager Business Events at Tourism New Zealand, said: “Local bid champions play a vital role in attracting international conferences that drive knowledge sharing and economic impact.

“We’re proud to support this fund and help grow New Zealand’s next generation of global conference leaders.”

University-based researchers who are active members of international associations and are keen to lead future conference bids are invited to apply for funding by 21 November 2025.
