Choose Chicago has appointed Meryl Vissel as vice president of communications and content, as the destination marketing organisation looks to strengthen Chicago’s international profile.

Vissel will lead a newly unified storytelling team covering communications, media relations and social media, with a remit to increase the destination’s international reach and drive visitation.

The appointment comes as destinations face growing competition for international meetings and events, with Chicago looking to strengthen how it communicates its offer to global audiences.

“Meryl Vissel brings exactly the kind of global perspective and hands-on destination experience Choose Chicago needs as we enter this next chapter of transformation and growth,” said Kristen Reynolds, president and CEO of Choose Chicago.

Vissel joins from the Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board, where she led corporate communications. She previously worked in communications for real estate company Hudson Pacific Properties and began her travel career with Cunard.

Her experience includes developing global media and content strategies around major events including the World Cup and Olympics.

“Having spent much of my career telling the stories of iconic destinations and travel brands, I’m honoured to join Choose Chicago and help share what makes the city so compelling with audiences around the world,” said Vissel.

Vissel officially joins Choose Chicago on 31 August.
