We know the old clichés - chocolate, cheese and cuckoo clocks and, indeed, Swiss yodelling - which has just been added to UNESCO’s cultural heritage list.

It’s certainly very picturesque - think snow-topped mountains, green valleys, and azure lakes. Switzerland’s also a very prosperous, stable country, highly regarded in fields ranging from pharmaceuticals and precision manufacturing to finance and insurance. And, just like any activity it engages with, its sporting credentials rank high, too.

For Barbra Albrecht, head of Switzerland Convention & Incentive Bureau (SCIB), this translates into opportunities to host more sporting events and related congresses. “In a way, Switzerland is the capital of sports, with Lausanne home to the International Olympic Committee and nearly 100 international sports federations based here,” she says.

“Switzerland already hosts big sporting events such as last year’s UEFA Women’s Euros, this year’s IIHF Men's Ice Hockey World Championship and next year’s FIS Alpine World Ski Championships. As a convention bureau, we are looking to carry this momentum forward and reach out to sports federations to host further competitions and championships, especially some of the more niche sports, complementing our work of acquiring association congresses.”

Padel is one she’s eyeing for the future. And when it comes to business events, Switzerland’s an even more attractive prospect.

Organisers of congresses and conferences with more than 300 delegates will find a fantastic range of modern convention centres, with a great choice of amenities, spectacular settings and recreational activities on their doorstep.

“What truly sets it apart is the execution," she says. "Every hotelier, DMC and venue partner taking part in this year’s event operated with unparalleled precision and warmth, ensuring this complex destination showcase ran without a hitch and highlighted the absolute best of each location visited.

“Additionally, the country's legendary train infrastructure is a massive asset for event planners. The travel system is efficient, pristine and punctual, making it effortless to move large groups comfortably through panoramic valleys to access different regions. Throughout our entire trip, we only had one car transfer and that was with me driving members of our team from Crans-Montana to Montreux as part of the challenge!

“Prior to this, my experience of working in Switzerland involved hosting incentive programmes in Zurich and Lucerne. Our clients' events started off at the Dolder Grand Hotel in Zurich and moved to an exclusive incentive retreat at the iconic Bürgenstock Resort, overlooking Lake Lucerne. Both experiences showcased Switzerland’s ability to deliver ultra-luxury on a grand scale. The itineraries were elevated by a range of high-end transfers and activities, from private jet transfers and helicopter rides over Alpine peaks to exclusive watchmaking workshops and sunset yacht charters.

“For any client looking to inspire their delegates, maximise productivity and offer a truly unique luxury experience, Switzerland shouldn’t just be on the radar, it should be at the very top of the list.”

AI leader

With artificial intelligence a global hot topic these days, it’s no surprise that Switzerland is proving to be an AI world leader, staging high-level events regularly in its major cities. For instance, the SwissTech Convention Center in Lausanne hosts the annual flagship Applied Machine Learning Days and this year’s focused on what’s next in AI, attracting thousands of researchers, industry leaders and innovators. The AI for Good Global Summit took place in July at Geneva’s Palexpo exhibition centre while Winterthur, near the German border, is a global hub for big data conferences.

This autumn, over 7,000 participants are expected at the second Zurich AI Festival, with summits, workshops and public discussions all hosted by companies at the forefront of AI development.

Gregory Baur, manager of Zurich Convention Bureau, says Zurich is a major player in AI because its world-class universities, corporate research laboratories, financial institutions, deep-tech investors and international talent all exist within a very small, highly connected ecosystem.

“Within the convention bureau, we use AI to support budget proposals and the handling of enquiries for meetings, events and hosted programmes,” he explains. “Clients can submit and review requests online while hotels and congress venues are able to respond directly through the system, allowing availability and proposals to be processed in real time. It also helps planners reduce administrative workload and focus more on programme design and delegate experience.”

Similarly, SCIB uses AI to give staff more time to focus on parts that need more attention and human judgement. “For example, we use it a lot for research, putting together different sources into summaries and from there we validate the data and bring it to the format that we need,” says Albrecht.

Infrastructure news

Never content to rest on its laurels, Switzerland continues to expand its road and rail systems while numerous hotels and meeting venues are opening or reopening after revamps. Most notably, Montreux Music & Convention Centre (2M2C), on the shores of Lake Geneva, is reopening this month, having been closed for three years for extensive renovation. The home of the Montreux Jazz Festival is again ready to host everything from scientific congresses to creative corporate events.

The Titlis Tower, 3,020 metres high in the Swiss Alps, has been transformed and now features a panoramic viewing platform, restaurant and Rolex boutique.

Eurostar has plans to start direct routes from London to Basel, Geneva and Zurich, taking about six hours. If approved, the first non-stop train link from the UK to the Swiss Alps will launch in the 2030s.

Sporting stars

For a landlocked country with a population of under 10 million, Switzerland boasts a fair share of sporting talent - tennis and Alpine sports champions, the only European country ever to win sailing’s America’s Cup, which it did twice, and it's just reached the last eight in the FIFA World Cup.
